Notes from the Head Gardener

The Botanist Files collection is a collaborative project between myself and Janice of Adelaide Fiber Co. The original color, "Birch, Please" was developed for a Seed Club colorway, based on the unique features of the paper birch tree. Did you know those black marks on the bark are called lenticels? They are prominent pores on the stem of a plant that allow for gas exchange between the air and the inside of the tree. Cool, huh??

I had an idea for the stitch pattern I wanted to use to capture that distinctive bark on the birch tree, and it applies to any project that is stockinette stitch-based. All you do is purl (on the RS; knit on the WS) the black stitches when they come up on your left needle! I designed a hat that uses this yarn and stitch pattern, called by the same name of the yarn; "Birch, Please".

Janice dyed three additional colorways inspired by the same idea... a chunk of dark yarn, with a wash of color and spattering of speckles on the remaining skein. Use these in the same manner as "Birch, Please"; purl the dark stitches when they come up on your left needle to add some fun texture to your fabric.
