Ophelia Beanie Hat

Ophelia Beanie Techniques Workshop

This stunning hat design is a celebration of clever color and beautiful detail. In this technique-forward class, we’ll explore the skills that make the Ophelia Beanie such a showstopper, from crisp two-color ribbing to the bold flourish of a Latvian braid.

During class, you’ll cast on using the German Twisted Cast On and begin the hat together, learning how to manage two colors smoothly right from the start. We’ll cover stranded knitting techniques in depth, including how to hold your yarns and how yarn dominance affects colorwork clarity. You’ll also practice a Latvian braid, a striking detail that adds polish and drama to the finished piece.

Whether you’re new to colorwork or looking to refine your technique, this class offers plenty of hands-on practice and helpful guidance, with time to experiment using scrap yarn before committing to your hat.

Topics Covered

  • German Twisted Cast On

  • Two-color ribbing

  • Stranded knitting techniques

  • Yarn dominance in stranded knitting

Materials

Yarn

  • For the hat: Fingering weight yarn in two high-contrast colors, 25 grams of each color. Our shop sample uses Gnome River Yarns Gnome’s Feet in March’s “COTM” and “Navy.” If you purchase March’s COTM, you can receive it early for this class.

  • For practicing techniques: Contrasting scrap yarn in any weight. DK or worsted works especially well for practice.

Needles
Interchangeable needles are helpful but not required. Use any needle style you prefer for hat knitting, such as a 16" circular plus DPNs for crown decreases, Magic Loop, or two circulars.

  • For the hat: US 2 (2.75 mm) for ribbing and US 2.5 (3.0 mm) for the body of the hat

  • For practicing techniques: Appropriate small-circumference needles for your scrap yarn

Other

  • Ophelia Beanie pattern by David Van De Kamp (available on Ravelry)

  • Stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle

Come ready to play with color, try new techniques, and leave with the confidence to tackle stranded hats with style and intention.
